Common words with ¡
¡Hola! (Hi!), ¡Gracias! (Thanks!), ¡Felicidades! (Congratulations!), ¡Qué bien! (Great!), ¡Cuidado! (Careful!), ¡Vamos! (Let's go!), ¡Feliz cumpleaños! (Happy birthday!)
Where it goes
- Where the exclamation starts, which isn't always the start of the sentence: María, ¡ven aquí! (María, come here!) · Si llegas tarde, ¡te quedas sin cena!
- Capital letter if it starts the sentence (¡Qué frío!), lowercase after a comma (Ay, ¡qué frío!).
- No period after the closing mark: “¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?”, never “¡Hola!.”.
- Doubled for emphasis: “¡¡¡Ganamos!!!” is fine in casual writing.
- With ¿ when the sentence both asks and exclaims: “¡¿Qué dices?!”.
For the opening question mark, see how to type ¿. The online keyboard adds ¡ for you when you end the sentence with !.
