Spanish Keyboard

How to type Spanish accents on Windows

On a laptop, the fastest way is the US-International keyboard: apostrophe then vowel gives á. Alt codes only work if you have a number pad. Here's every method, with the exact Windows 10 and 11 menus.

The fastest way

Add the United States-International keyboard (steps below). It turns the apostrophe and quote keys into “dead keys”: they wait for the next letter and put the accent on it. ' + a = á, " + u = ü, ~ + n = ñ. Every letter stays where it is on your English keyboard, so there's nothing new to learn.

Without changing any settings

Set up the US-International keyboard

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings › Time & language › Language & region.
  2. Next to your language (e.g. English (United States)), click ⋯ › Language options.
  3. Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard and choose United States-International.
  4. Switch keyboards with Win Space, or from the language indicator on the taskbar.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings › Time & Language › Language.
  2. Select your language and click Options.
  3. Click Add a keyboard and choose United States-International.
  4. Switch with Win Space.

If you'd rather have a dedicated ñ key, add Spanish (Latin America) or Spanish (Spain) in the same place. Several symbols move (@, quotes, brackets), so check the Spanish keyboard layout first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type accents on an HP, Dell or Lenovo laptop?

The same on all of them: add the United States-International keyboard and type apostrophe, then vowel. Alt codes won't work without a number pad.

Why doesn't Alt + 160 work?

It needs the number pad with Num Lock on. Use Alt + 0225 instead: four-digit codes work the same on every Windows PC.

How do I remove US-International if it gets in the way?

In Settings › Time & language › Language & region › Language options, click ⋯ next to the keyboard and choose Remove.
