The four-digit codes (with a leading 0) are Windows codes and work the same on every PC. The old three-digit codes date back to MS-DOS and depend on the system language: Alt 164 gives ñ almost everywhere, but Alt 181 gives Á only on Spanish Windows; on English Windows it gives ╡.

How to use an Alt code

  1. Turn on Num Lock (the number pad light).
  2. Hold the left Alt key.
  3. Type the code on the number pad on the right, not the number row: 0, 2, 4, 1.
  4. Let go of Alt. ñ appears.

No number pad?

In Word: Alt X

Word converts Unicode codes: type 00f1 and press Alt X to get ñ. It works with any code in the Unicode column, no number pad needed. Press Alt X again to turn it back into the code.

On Mac, Chromebook and Linux

There are no Alt codes. On a Mac, use the Option shortcuts in the table (accents on Mac). On Chromebook and Linux, Ctrl ⇧ U, the Unicode code without “U+”, then Enter: Ctrl ⇧ U f1 ⏎ gives ñ (accents on Chromebook).

Frequently asked questions

What is the Alt code for ñ?

Alt + 0241 (or Alt + 164) for ñ, and Alt + 0209 (or Alt + 165) for Ñ.

What is the ASCII code for ñ?

ñ isn't in the original 128-character ASCII. In MS-DOS extended ASCII it's 164, which is what Alt + 164 uses; in Windows-1252 and Unicode it's 241.

Why isn't my Alt code working?

Check that Num Lock is on and that you're using the number pad, not the number row. Some programs, like certain terminals, ignore Alt codes.
